Google is a dictator
The issue with Google, is they favor the same large websites like Wikipedia, CNN, and Reddit. These large powerful players are not infinitely wise, and so usually generative AI or low quality content is shoved in people’s faces just so they stay on top. And even worse, Wikipedia, CNN, and their ilk will push pro-authority propaganda in a neutral tone, to train audiences that obedience is the norm.

YaCy Basics
Solr
YaCy’s search is powered by the open source engine Solr. Solr is what Duckduckgo also uses, and many other big websites. What makes YaCy unique from other uses of Solr, is it makes no difference if you’re using it on your local home computer or running it on a VPS in a datacenter.
Torrents
YaCy lets you share results over DHT torrents, this is similar to torrenting a movie. You can pull results from the whole network, or just your local database.
Home PC
If it’s run on your local PC, then it’s more private and you’re in control. But then you’d want to do some crawling to not be completely dependent on the results from the random other nodes you connect to.
VPS
If you’re using it on someone else’s cloud, then they can filter what results you’re seeing. This is more like a traditional search engine, however the advantage here is hopefully there are many different choices with access to the DHT index. So it decentralizes the decisions over what to filter. Also depending on what that instance has locally, will dramatically change the results.
Variety
The main thing is this gives you variety by not only having an alternative to Big Tech, but even massive variety among our different instances.
